There’s the version of travel people think happens and then there’s the version people who work in travel prepare for! After years of working in the airline industry and traveling frequently as a destination wedding photographer, I’ve realized most travel stress doesn’t come from major disasters but from tiny preventable mistakes, unrealistic timelines and assuming everything will go perfectly.
Especially when you’re traveling for something important like a destination wedding, elopement or a honeymoon so here are the travel tips I wish more people knew before flying internationally! (Particularly from Canada).
Book direct whenever possible
If there’s one travel tip I’d give almost everyone, it’s this: whenever possible, book directly with the airline or the hotel! Pretty please!
Third-party booking sites can sometimes look cheaper upfront but they often create unnecessary complications if anything needs to be changed before you travel. This is because when you book through a third party, your reservation is managed through them and not directly through the airline or hotel. That means if you need to make any changes like your itinerary, name, dates or fix any problem, the airline or hotel often can’t actually help you. Instead, you’ll usually be redirected back to the third-party company that issued the booking and this is where people get stuck…
If there’s a day-of operational disruption like delays or cancellations the airline is still responsible for handling those disruptions according to your fare rules and passenger protections. But if the issue involves how the ticket was originally booked, issued, or modified through a third party, the airline may have limited ability to step in.
Sometimes the cheaper booking option ends up costing more in stress later.
Check entry requirements before you book not before you leave
A surprising number of travelers assume “If my passport isn’t expired, I’m fine”. But not always! Many countries may require:
- 6 months passport validity past your return date
- blank passport pages
- proof of onward travel
- visas
- tourist taxes
- or additional entry forms
And these requirements can change! One of the most stressful situations at an airport is watching someone realize they legally cannot board because of documentation issues they didn’t know about.
Especially for destination weddings, check requirements early before flights are even booked!

The airline is not responsible for separate tickets
This is a hugeee one! A lot of travelers try to save money by booking one airline to a major city and then a completely separate ticket onward. This is very risky because if your first flight is delayed and you miss the second one, neither airline is responsible! Rebooking protection usually disappears and you may need to buy a brand-new ticket yourself. Airlines only rebook connections that are under the same itinerary.
So if you’re traveling for a wedding, a cruise, a major event or anything time-sensitive avoid separate tickets unless you’ve intentionally built in overnight buffer time.
Look into loyalty programs earlier than you think
Even if you travel once a year, you can sign up for airline loyalty programs! You don’t need to fly constantly to benefit.
Points and status can help with so much, like:
- free baggage
- seat selection
- upgrades
- priority boarding
- lounge access
- flight flexibility
- and easier rebooking during disruptions
Frequent travelers know that loyalty programs aren’t just about luxury perks. Sometimes they genuinely improve your experience during stressful travel days.

Reserve your seats in advance
Do not assume seats will “just work themselves out”. Flights are fuller than most people realize these days. If you don’t reserve seats you can get separated from your partner, end up in a middle seat or in rare cases, face oversold situations with limited seating options left.
For long-haul or important travel, pre-selecting seats is so worth it! You can chose extra leg room, a window seat to lean on or the aisle if you need to get up often! A tiny expense upfront can massively improve your travel day.
Just because you can book a tight connection doesn’t mean you should
This is one of the biggest travel mistakes people make and is my most talked about tip. Airline systems allow connection times based on the minimum legal requirement. Not the comfortable option! A 50 minute connection might technically qualify but that does not mean it’s smart. Especially in Canada during the winter…
These things regularly affect tight connections:
- deicing
- snowstorms
- maintenance
- long taxi times
- customs lines
- delayed boarding
- baggage transfer timing
- holding for inbound connections
From an airline employee, tight connections are stressful even when everything runs perfectly. For destination weddings or important trips, longer connections are almost always the better choice!

If you have an important event or cruise, arrive at least 2 days early!
If you absolutely cannot miss something like a wedding, cruise departure, tour or any major event, please do not arrive the night before if you can avoid it. Give yourself at least 2 buffer days, especially during winter travel from Canada! Once disruptions start, recovery options can disappear quickly.
You can actually get to settle in instead of immediately running on stress and timelines.
Download the airline app & keep your contact information updated
This is one of the simplest travel tips that makes a big difference. Before your trip, download your airline’s app, turn notifications on and make sure your contact information (email and phone number) is updated on your booking. Airline apps usually update much faster in real time!
With information like:
- gate changes
- delays
- boarding updates
- baggage carousel information
- cancellations
- or rebooking options
…before the gate agents even know about it.
If the airline can’t contact you properly, you may miss important updates entirely. It’s one of those tiny preparation steps that experienced travelers almost always do automatically.
Travel feels glamorous online
In reality, good travel usually comes down to flexible planning, realistic expectations and understanding how it all works. Most travel disasters aren’t caused by one massive problem, but small issues that stack together. It’s usually fine but when your trip involves something important, like your wedding day, planning smarter creates so much more peace of mind!
Especially when you’re flying internationally from Canada.
