Choosing where to elope is usually the most exciting part! It’s also the part that gets overwhelming the fastest. Everything looks beautiful online. Every destination claims to be “perfect” and suddenly you’re comparing 47 beaches in 5 different countries while wondering if you even want a beach anymore!
The best place to elope isn’t just about photos. It’s about flight time from Canada, how stressful travel feels, whether you’ll actually enjoy being there, and what your days will look like once you arrive.
Some places are stunning but exhausting to reach, some are easy but overcrowded and some look incredible online but don’t actually fit the kind of experience you want.
If you’re still figuring everything out, here’s exactly how to plan a destination elopement from Canada step by step so all the pieces connect naturally!

What actually makes a location “good” for eloping?
Before choosing a destination, it helps to think about the experience first! The best elopement locations for Canadian couples usually have:
- relatively easy flights from major Canadian airports
- good weather during the season you want
- transportation that’s simple once you land
- beautiful scenery without needing hours of driving
- accommodations that fit the vibe you want
Honestly, the biggest thing is how the place feels! Do you want:
- slow mornings and beach days?
- adventure and exploring?
- luxury and relaxation?
- a mix of everything?
That answer matters way more than choosing the “trendiest” location.
Caribbean islands (the easiest warm-weather option from Canada)
For most Canadian couples, the Caribbean is the easiest destination elopement choice overall! I mean, who doesn’t love going “down south”?
Especially if you’re flying from these major cities:
- Toronto
- Montreal
- Vancouver
- Calgary
You can often get direct flights depending on the season, which makes a massive difference when planning a stress free wedding experience!
The biggest benefit of the Caribbean is that it feels tropical without requiring huge travel days. Instead of two layovers, 20+ hours of travel & major jet lag you can sometimes wake up in Canada and be on a beach by afternoon!
Best Caribbean islands for Canadian couples
For ease & all inclusive resort packages:
- Jamaica
- Cuba
- Dominican Republic
You could even throw Mexico in that list! These locations are more well known and have multiple flights a day from big Canadian hubs like Toronto and Montreal!
For more unique & private:
- Grenada
- Saint Lucia
- Guadeloupe
- Turks & Caicos
- Aruba
There are so many gorgeous islands that are relatively easy to travel to from Canada who have quieter beaches, rainforest areas, smaller boutique stays and a slower atmosphere overall.
If your dream day includes spending most of it near the water, the Caribbean usually makes the most sense and it’s hard to beat the convenience factor from Canada!

Portugal (one of the best “different but easy” options)
Portugal is becoming way more popular for elopements and honestly, it deserves it! It’s one of my favourite places to visit.
The Algarve gives you dramatic coastal cliffs, beautiful beaches, incredible food, walkable cities and a more relaxed European feel without feeling overly complicated!
For Canadian couples, Portugal works especially well because:
- flights are often cheaper than people expect
- it’s more affordable than Italy or France
- English is widely spoken in tourist areas
- transportation is fairly easy
The Algarve region is especially beautiful for couples wanting ocean views without the huge crowds you see in some other European destinations. Portugal also works really well if you want your elopement to feel like a full vacation experience instead of just one wedding day!

Hawaii (easy to navigate and consistently beautiful)
Hawaii is popular for a reason! For couples nervous about international travel, it’s one of the easiest destination elopement options because: it feels familiar, everything is easy to navigate, you don’t need to figure out language barriers and there’s a huge variety of scenery!
One island can give you beaches, cliffs, waterfalls, jungle landscapes and volcanic scenery. And from western Canada especially, flights can be surprisingly manageable!
Best islands for elopements
Kauai: Best for dramatic scenery, quieter atmosphere, lush greenery, adventurous couples
Maui: Best for balanced experience, luxury stays, beaches + greenery, easier accessibility
Oahu: Best for convenience, shorter travel between locations, couples wanting both city and nature
Hawaii is a great middle ground if you want something destination based while still feeling comfortable and straightforward! The only thing to watch out for is requirements and permits in specific locations.
Looking for somewhere even more unique?
Not every couple wants the typical destination elopement locations, and honestly, some of the most memorable places are the ones people overlook!
Costa Rica is perfect for couples wanting a mix of beaches, waterfalls, jungle villas, and adventure without feeling impossible to get to from Canada. There are seasonal (November – April) flights daily to Liberia and San Jose from Toronto and Montreal!
Iceland offers dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and black sand beaches for couples wanting something moodier and completely different.
Indonesia is a little further from Canada but has beautiful black sand beaches, gorgeous villas on the beach or in the jungle and has a delicious food.
Places like Madeira or the Azores are also becoming incredible hidden gems for couples who want beautiful scenery without the crowds of more popular European destinations.
If you’re drawn toward locations that feel a little less expected, it can make the entire experience feel even more personal!

Things Canadian couples should think about before choosing
Flight routes matter more than you think! A beautiful location stops feeling beautiful very quickly after three airports, delayed connections and hauling luggage across ferries. Sometimes the “slightly less exotic” option creates a way better overall experience.
Hurricane season is real! A lot of southern tropical destinations are best between December to April. Summer and early fall can bring hurricanes, heavy rain and unpredictable weather.
Think about your guests too! If you’re inviting family or friends, accessibility matters. A destination that’s easy for you might not be easy for older parents, kids or guests on tighter budgets.
Your budget stretches differently everywhere! Portugal might give you a luxury villa, amazing food and multiple experiences for the same cost as a smaller resort stay somewhere else. Location changes everything when it comes to budget.
In the end..
There isn’t one “best” place to elope from Canada. There’s just the place that fits your priorities best! Some couples want easy flights and warmth, adventure and scenery, luxury and relaxation or something unique that doesn’t feel overdone.
The right place is usually the one that feels exciting without feeling stressful!
If getting there feels manageable, the atmosphere matches your vision, and you can actually slow down and enjoy the experience, you’re probably looking in the right direction!
